A 3-day (2-night) tour to the Bavarian Alps for up to four people, starting & finishing in Munich. The tour takes in Berchtesgaden, the Eagle's Nest mountain-top retreat, and the remains of the Obersalzberg 'Alpine Chancellery' complex.

A chance to take in delightful mountain scenery and see the area where the Allies feared that World War II might end in a last-ditch defence of an 'Alpine Redoubt'

The history, context, and significance of all we shall see will be clearly explained by your guide Dr Andrew Thomson (see More About Us).

Berchtesgaden and Munich
A 3-day / 2-night private tour: on-ground arrangements (make your own way to Munich and back)

In search of an authentic German experience: we have chosen to stay in Bad Reichenhall, gateway town to the Berchtesgaden area, as it is a medium-sized town that is very typical of the area. By contrast, Berchtesgaden itself - a delight (and a 'must') to visit - can be overrun with foreign visitors in its hotels and restaurants; as a honeypot destination it loses a bit in authenticity as a hotel venue

Day One - Munich; drive to Bad Reichenhall
Meet you at the airport mid-morning (or hotel if you have spent the previous night in Munich)

I will take you on a guided walking tour of Munich city centre taking in today's main sites, the exact route of the march led by Hitler during the November 1923 Putsch (finally blocked by troops beside the Feldhernhalle), and the locations where the Nazis commemorated that event (around present-day Konigsplatz). After a snack lunch there is an optional opportunity to visit the German Technical Museum, Germany's main science & technology museum with (amongst other things) World War II era aeroplanes and rocket-programme artefacts. Two-hour drive south-east to Bad Reichenhall in the Bavarian Alps, right by the German-Austrian border. Check in to our hotel (3-star).

Day Two - Berchtesgaden; the Eagle's Nest; Obersalzberg
Berchtesgaden is a pleasant 25 minute drive from Bad Reichenhall. Over the course of today and tomorrow morning we will visit three sites:

1. Berchtesgaden town
The town is a delight to wander and window-shop in with pretty cafés, craft & gift shops, and a Sun Promenade with lovely views out over the surrounding mountains. A longer (or second) visit could include a visit to the Schloss (Castle) and/or a two-hour walking tour of the town and the hills that it is nestled on.

2. The Eagle's Nest
A tea-house for Hitler to take distinguished visitors was constructed for him as a birthday present in 1938 on the very top of the Kehlstein mountain that rises over Berchtesgaden. Since he disliked heights he only made 14 official visits (!), but the much-photographed building makes a fascinating visit as it is the only significant Nazi structure to survive in the Berchtesgaden area. The ride up is exciting - by both bus and then a lift inside the mountain. Lunch is available in the complex, or beer or coffee on the terrace; bus & entry (but not meals) included in our tour price.
Option: a 2-hour walk down - from experience I can confirm that it is good on the calf muscles!

3. The Obersalzberg complex
Halfway up the Kehlstein mountain and midway between Berchtesgaden town and the Eagle's Nest itself, Obersalzberg is the starting point for the buses up to the Eagle's Nest. It is also the site of a vast complex of buildings that included Hitler's famous Berghof Alpine retreat, guest houses, and houses for Bormann, Goebels, Speer and the rest of the terrible gang. A visit includes the excellent modern museum ('Documentation Center'), a walk through the woods to see the sparse traces of the Berghof site (all significant buildings were destroyed in 1952 when the US Army took over the whole site as a recreation complex), and a tour inside a set of air-raid tunnels built under the complex (fascinating - but obviously not for the claustrophobic). Entries are included in our tour price.

The projected weather for the mountain-top Eagle's Nest visit will be the main determinant of what order we do things. With two days to play with, we have tomorrow morning up our sleeve if the Eagle's Nest is misted-in on all of this first day.

Day Three - Salzburg option; return to Munich
We will cover this morning whatever we did not cover yesterday. Alternatively we have the option of time in nearby Salzburg (Austria) this morning - or an early return to Munich for museum visit(s).

Leaving the Berchtesgaden/Salzburg area by 2 p.m. for the two-hour drive back to Munich, dropping you back at the airport around 4.15 p.m. (or the city centre - for train or hotel - around 4.30 p.m.).
